Respect High Heels in Music!
We love women who give us songs we can sing along to. Music we can dance to. Art we can reflect on.
But God knows that life outside the spotlight is no bed of roses for Denmark's female artists: they earn far less than their male colleagues, get less radio airplay and have far fewer opportunities to continue their careers after the age of 30.
And they have to put up with a lot backstage.
The numbers speak for themselves
🎤 Only 16% of Danish artists who have their music played on the radio are women.
🎤 In 2022, there was not a single woman on the Top 10 list of the most played Danish musicians. In the Top 100, there were only 13 women.
🎤 2 out of 3 women in the Danish music industry have experienced inappropriate behavior within the last five years. And when it comes to women under 30, the figure is 80%.
We can do better!
That's why we're celebrating International Women's Day with danish artists Kira Skov, Annette Heick and Karen Mukupa.
The three experienced and seasoned musicians have joined forces in Semper Femina; a network that aims to support and strengthen female artists in the Danish music industry.
It's a song we're happy to sing along to.

It's no small thing that Annette Heick has been subjected to throughout her long and impressive career as a singer and entertainer. Even though it's 2024, there's not much glamor to being a female musician in today's Denmark.
"She's too old for our festival!"
Kira Skov's booker has received this message several times in recent years. Apparently, the fact that she is one of Denmark's most experienced and critically acclaimed rock musicians doesn't make much difference.
And she's not alone, because there's not much glamor to being a female musician in today's Denmark.
"We laugh all the way to the bank when Mukupa gets the girls and cleans up the industry," Karen Mukupa sings on her latest album.
And God knows the music industry is in need of a clean-up.
